Did you know?

Large item Disposal
Please contact Rumpke at least 48 hours before your regularly scheduled collection to request a large item pick-up for acceptable large items, and/or excessive amounts of trash. Television sets cannot exceed 32 inches for curbside pick-up. All residents of St. Matthews are allowed to dispose of one large item per week, at no charge.

Mattress and Upholstered Furniture Disposal
All residents of St. Matthews are allowed to dispose of one large item per week, at no charge. Old Mattresses, Box Springs, or Upholstered Furniture, MUST BE COMPLETELY WRAPPED IN PLASTIC, to qualify for pick up and disposal by the city service provider. Call Rumpke at least 48 hours prior to the regularly scheduled collection pick-up day to arrange for disposal.

Disposing of Junk
Disposing of accumulated junk is always a challenge, especially for many folks who are moving to a new home or for residents who plan to clean out the garage, basement or other locations, that over time accumulate personal items. While it is good to clean out and organize, the City of St. Matthews would like to remind you that the St. Matthews service provider, Rumpke, depending upon truck space, will only pick up at no cost to you, one large item each week, at the time of your regular garbage collection. If you have a large item, or several items to dispose of, please contact Rumpke directly at 800-828-8171, at least 48 hours in advance, so that they can schedule a special junk pick up and advise you of any additional charges that you might incur. Be a good neighbor. Don’t amass junk and debris in front of the home for weeks. Call Rumpke at 502-568-3800 and have it taken away.

Curbside Reminders

  • Pool chemicals and other items marked as flammable or hazardous don’t belong in trash or recycling bins. Please contact your local solid waste district for disposal options.
  • Lithium-ion batteries – like those used in yard equipment, cell phones, or laptops, shouldn’t be placed in curbside containers. They can ignite when compacted in garbage trucks.
  • Latex-based paint is accepted curbside; however, it must be completely solidified prior to collection. To solidify, place kitty litter in the paint and mix until it becomes solid. Please remove the lid from the container and place the container outside of the trash can.
  • To properly dispose of charcoal embers and spent fireworks, please completely soak in water prior to placing in trash.

Christmas Tree Disposal
Live Christmas trees can be disposed of along with your regular pick up of sanitation & yard waste within the 2-week period following Christmas day.  It is not necessary to cut the tree in any specific lengths. Place your tree at the edge of the road, or in the area where your usual trash and yard waste are picked up. Trees should be free of decorations such as lights, ornaments, or other trimmings. After the 2-week period, trees must be cut into 6 ft lengths and bundled, or placed in your recycling container, or taken to the Metro Louisville Recycling Center located at 595 N. Hubbards Lane.

Recycle Wrapping Paper
All NON-foil wrapping paper can be easily recycled with your usual recycling items. Wrapping paper should be free of bows and trimmings.
