Mayor Richard J. (Rick) Tonini took office and leadership of city government on January 1, 2015, subsequent to serving as city councilman for 30 years. As councilman, Rick served on many committees, but most notable is his service as Chairman of the Police Steering Committee, which has contributed to making the City of St. Matthews Police Department one of the most recognized departments throughout the state.
Through his years of serving the St. Matthews community, Rick freely offered his time, accepting appointments to the previous City of St. Matthews Tax Equalization Board and later elected chairman of this board, the position of City of St. Matthews Tax Assessor, St. Mathews City Treasurer, and member/chairman of the Jefferson County Board of Zoning Adjustment.
Since the mid 1970’s, Rick has selflessly devoted his time and talents to the St. Matthews Fire Protection District, serving as a volunteer firefighter, Trustee, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the Jefferson County Suburban Fire Service board.
Rick is the co-owner of a St. Matthews family business, Tonini Church Supply Company. He and his wife, Denise are members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, were Rick, Denise and their two daughters Lauren and Allison attended elementary school. Rick is an alumnus of St. Xavier High School and the University of Kentucky where he received an Associate’s degree.
Rick brings to his position as mayor, years of experience, dedication to service, and a passion for continuing to make the City of St. Matthews the very best place to live, work and play.
