Yard Waste – Storm Debris

Yard Waste – Storm Debris

Leaves and grass clippings will be picked up regularly, on the same day as the scheduled sanitation collection, if placed at the street in no larger than 30-gallon containers marked ‘yard waste only’, paper yard waste bags, or compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards, (no alley pickup). Please note that designated yard waste must not contain any trash or garbage and if mixed cannot be collected for recycling. No more than 15 bags or bundles will be collected on any collection day.

The City of St. Matthews offers free stickers to designate containers for yard waste. Visit city hall during normal business hours to pick up your sticker(s).

Live Christmas trees can be disposed of along with your regular pick up of sanitation & yard waste within the 2-week period following Christmas day.  It is not necessary to cut the tree in any specific lengths. Place your tree at the edge of the road, or in the area where your usual trash and yard waste are picked up. Trees should be free of decorations such as lights, ornaments, or other trimmings. After the 2-week period, trees must be cut into 6 ft lengths and bundled, or placed in your recycling container, or taken to the Metro Louisville Recycling Center located at 595 N. Hubbards Lane.

As general storms arrive, it is possible that you may have small limbs, under 6 inches in diameter, or other debris to dispose of. If so, these items should be placed in marked Yard Waste Only trash containers or bundled with twine. Bundles should be no more than four feet in length and weigh no more than fifty pounds. Place the containers or bundles at the street edge at the time of your normally scheduled garbage pick-up

Severe Storm Debris Pick-Up

After a severe storm event where large tree branches have fallen & debris is present, place storm damage at curb side. Note that limbs with a diameter of more than 6 inches are not considered yard waste. City workers will remove at their first opportunity. If your storm debris has been at curbside for pick-up more than 24 hours, please contact city hall at (502) 899-2517.
