The St. Matthews Police Department (SMPD) fully supports Community Oriented Policing. The phrase “community oriented policing” has become familiar to millions of citizens throughout our country. The concept refers to a partnership between citizens and their law enforcement agency—police officers engaging the public to help prevent and solve crimes and the public assisting the police to improve the safety and quality of their community. In communities where a true partnership exists, the crime rates are usually reduced and the quality of life enhanced.
As part of this partnership, the SMPD provides enhanced services that larger departments may not have the resources to provide. One of the enhanced services offered is providing officers to speak to civic groups or businesses about crime prevention tips as well as to help establish block watch programs.
